If you and I were the sun and the moon,
I think people would understand more about life.
Because you see, If I were the moon and you were the sun,
Then I would linger in the mornings to see you waking up.
And people would look at the two of us in the sky and say,
"That doesn't make any sense."
But I would ignore their ignorance,
because if they only knew how beautiful you are,
If they stopped to appreciate just how miraculous a sunrise is,
they too would stay later than they should
admiring the light they take for granted.
I imagine the twilight hours would be my least favorite time of the day,
You leaving right as I can come back out again,
and all the while the world would be getting dark,
and the only light would be a reflection of you bouncing off of me
(because of course love,
you are the reason I shine so brightly).
And I would be so sad throughout the night that even nature would pity me;
The wolves would mourn from clifftops in the cold dark air,
And owls would hoot in anxiety,
because contrary to popular belief, owls are not nocturnal;
They, like myself, are simply unable to sleep when the sun is gone,
and so we all would wait
Myself AND the owls.
The tide would have to cry for me,
because I'm a man, and men don't cry
in public
and the crickets would try to soothe me as I made my journey
to the spot in the sky that I would have memorized,
memorized as the spot I reach just as you're waking up again.
And that, that would be my favorite time of every day,
because I would watch you every morning until I went blind,
and when I went blind I would be even happier,
because, having perfectly ingrained every glorious inch of your body to my mind,
I wouldn't need my eyes anymore,
and my sense of touch would be heightened
so that I could feel every ray of your light caress my face
and appreciate it all.
I think that if we really understood more about life,
people would live waiting for sunrises,
and you and I would never have to get out of bed.
Author notes
The imagery here is wonderful in my opinion, if you can focus on the play of night time and day time you'll understand the ending alright. The owl bit might help too, but this is all for the reader to enjoy.
