To Darcy, From Elizabeth

(Pride and Predjudice by Jane Austen)

What eye so dark as thine
could hold inside a gentle heart?
My first impressions
were obsolete
but what of thine?
Pray tell and why so silent yet?
Have I not questioned this past hour
(Or was it two?)
How lowly you held our activities
and I had thought I was pure
yes, naive
(Didn’t you?)
But that rogue inside you
he made me love you
and inflamed my ire
Dampened my wit
Left me desolate
Then to make amends
for my families folly
Why such a gesture?
It could not be done
save to an end
Where stand I in your eyes?
A mere wall flower
or do you remember
those bright blushing cheeks
of that summer run
Across moors
across miles
for a beloved sister
in the clutches of death
(What thought you
and what saw you?)
Oh was I too blind
to note your concern?
for a daffodil turned daisy
and hidden from the sun
How I could cry
when I survey life’s miseries
and yet
here I am
safe in your arms

    Hi Noor!
I'm honoured that you have enjoyed this poem so much! I love all things Austen and I'm also a huge Bronte fan too. There's something elegantly beautiful, yet tangibly real in that type of Victorian novel. It lets us escape yet helps us better understand life. Thank you sweet friend.

    Refusal and then surrender.
    Beautiful and romantic lass.
Almost cinematic with a taste of Shakespeare.

...What eye so dark as thine..

Articulate and sophisticated with great artistic beauty.
How your comment is valued so knowing what a fine poet you are.

    Peace my sister,
    Lowell Poe.

Gosh this is very stong indeed, it has a great rhythm too, and actually, much to my kids amazement and applause, I just read it out loud, like a mini play, it sounds really really effective, there is a very elegant quality to your work it reflects the classic, and yet has a hint of modern that makes it appeal to many generations, this is great, very clever and creative
thanks for sharing, and happy new year to you
