A Poem for Grateful Greg

Missing image
Mispriced device kindles heart divine,
taught us to forget complicated weights and exiled estates.
Rejoice herein shall we in this, when
Untainted, blameless blush broke Adam’s unpitied rib.

But take comfort in this,
Thus, that I shall not embrace my own safety
to seek the world of accepted love,
or other such injury.

Though my hand be sometimes short of means,
much like groans that cannot precede offense,
my quill approves to remove the urged extraction of
merit, for I seek and give grace.

Wherefore, we thank you, God,
To stir thou not our weaknesses beyond the end of flesh,
oh tyrant gravity, I dwell now in God’s presence,
bearing forth now and know oh, lonely forum of my beloved,
how I still love you.

Wrestle this ardor not in vain,
intermingle no wish beyond pure desire.
infect not your gait with desert pain,
nor harbor your soul in summer rain.

For know this from his life,
when no offense is taken,
forgiveness is just eleven things,
the rose blooms in its right moment,
and our flight by this heaven un-endangers
assembled eternities.

Came not Christ to unbreak the broken of this earth,
to unbreak the eggs’ yolk that human folk never could?
Yet dreary drum of lonely dove needs rhyme,
So we his friends gather near to hold dear

Lively hands clean sluggish feet in vain,
but in Greg’s gentle eyes I felt a humble favor of grace surround my face.
and the mad mutterings of cold worship strike a soul more foul dead than
staggering wines of giddy sin.

But not so with Greg.
Just like the Gospel sound that sang to
‘lay our pain down
and wear forgiveness like a crown”,
Greg also won my respect to
“trade ashes in for beauty,
and lay every burden down at the foot of the Cross”.

Greg, like ee cummings wrote,
we carry your heart in our hearts,
in our hearts we carry your heart.
Even now,
we are ever present and carried in your heart,
and therefore we live forever.

Author notes

Greg passed Saturday shoveling snow in his driveway. He was a friend in AA and at church. A husband, a father, a friend to many, a mentor in the Youth Ministry, a musician, and more. I know the poem needs work, but I can't get objective yet.

Please tell me what you think

I plan to revise this poem: please leave constructive criticism!

I see his wife at church and she has really struggled. I go to meetings of AA with his friends, too, who still talk about him. This thread is the walls of our hearts.
