It’s Happy This and Merry That
Can’t you see that hearts are breaking?
So many people, crying, suffering
While we go out celebrating
Jesus has his birthday soon
But another mother’s lost her son
She can’t recall it is Christmas time
His battle wasn’t won
Another name gets carved in stone
His photo goes up there, on TV
“I think that is sad”, I hear you say
“But what’s it got to do with me?”
“They know the risks when they sign on
No one forces them to join”
But if there was “call up” then you would see
The other side of the coin
“I didn’t start any stupid war
I never wanted anyone to die”
They know that, those lads over there
But you are their reason why
So you can celebrate your Christmas
In whatever way you chose
You can eat and drink and hug your kids
Or pickle yourself in booze
The choice is yours because of them
So ask what you can do
To help them and their families
Who give their Christmases for you
Can’t you see that hearts are breaking?
So many people, crying, suffering
While we go out celebrating
Jesus has his birthday soon
But another mother’s lost her son
She can’t recall it is Christmas time
His battle wasn’t won
Another name gets carved in stone
His photo goes up there, on TV
“I think that is sad”, I hear you say
“But what’s it got to do with me?”
“They know the risks when they sign on

They know that, those lads over there
But you are their reason why
So you can celebrate your Christmas
In whatever way you chose
You can eat and drink and hug your kids
Or pickle yourself in booze
The choice is yours because of them

Who give their Christmases for you

Thank you so much for your comment. This is a subject close to my heart and if reading this makes anyone think of them that little bit more than usual, then I am happy. God bless them all and their families who wait.

Wow. This is so true, and sadly what goes through a lot of peoples' heads. Too many take freedom for granted, never stopping to thank the ones keeping that freedom in tact; in fact, a lot of times it's not enough for them. Great job with this. Thank you for entering this truth, and best of luck!

I am no longer connected with the forces in any way but I feel for every family, every young woman or man who has to watch that special person walk away from them to go to a war zone. My hopes and prayers go to all who fight for us. Thank you for your comment Hilly.

Thank you for your comment Peter. I only wish our country would show more support all the year round. Some may never agree with any war but we can show support for those now, and over the years, who have fought to give us the freedom of choice.

Ohhh... very well said.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this poem.
I felt emotion within your words.
So true. They fight for you and I, and alot
of people give them s*it over it. It's depressing.
Excellent job.
Thank you for entering and good luck!
