The Young and 'Fair'

When life was my delight, while often lost in flight,
My mind saw through the night those things that I thought right.
But as my mind grew old, and this world grew so cold,
I saw not what I thought I would, I saw only the bold.

When lovers grew too few, and I sought friends anew
I looked around to see, and friendships often grew.
But as I moved about, in ways that folks are sold
I saw not what I thought I would, I saw only the bold.

When I consent to stay, and press on anyway
refusing still to pray for prices I can't pay;
my choices grow too few though I am oft extolled
I saw not what I thought I would, I saw only the bold.

When life is my delight, it brings on my own night,
while I know I'm not right, but would with all my might.
Though young and fair have gone, I'm hard, but not yet cold,
I saw not what I thought I would, I saw only the bold.

Author notes

the same idiot who said "It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all" should be introduced to the brute that declared "all is fair in love and war" I don't think either one of them thought twice about what they were really saying...

(No, I don't care who I insulted.)

    Use title Queen used.

Yes, you have used a similar layout to the C16 poem. You were not innovative in your dictiuon and the poem tended to be circuitous rather than incrementally repetitious.
Thank you for this entry, friend.
    Best wishes.
