She takes a glass and pours another stiff drink
Salutes herself in the mirror and begins to think
My audience adores me, I am a glittering star
Lost from the real world she has gone down so far
Her face was once loved and her long blond hair
At her presence on the stage they would gasp and stare
Shakespearian beauties, she has played them all
Voluptuous Queens and dainty fairies so small
She staggers unsteadily and bows to the crowd
Reveling in the encores and the applause so loud
In a sad one room bedsit over a backstreet café
A naked bulb hangs over the bed where she lay
She has done tales of legends from lands far away
She could quote every line to this very day
Stage sets of woodlands, castles, the stuff of dreams
Grease paint, lipsticks and pots full of creams
The women so envy her youth and her charms
She has been held in so many leading men’s arms
Graciously she accepts yet another bouquet of blooms
So many flowers in every one of her rooms
A bucket of champagne on ice, another gentleman’s gift
A luxurious mink coat so thick and heavy to lift
She takes a few little blue pills to steady her nerves
She smoothes her gown over her sensual curves
She applies more make-up under the lights
This is her gala performance, a night of all nights
The well wishers all crowd her and the men kiss her hand
The cheers are deafening, the theatre so grand
At the end with a curtsey she sweeps low to the floor………
A crazy old woman is found dead, the star is no more
Salutes herself in the mirror and begins to think
My audience adores me, I am a glittering star
Lost from the real world she has gone down so far
Her face was once loved and her long blond hair
At her presence on the stage they would gasp and stare
Shakespearian beauties, she has played them all

Author notes
[REF:] In her world of dreams and make believe
She reigns forever
With all her glory
In this world of endless fantasy
She makes it happen
It's her reality

Thank you for stopping by Desire and for your kind comment on my poem. I am glad you enjoyed it. It was just imagination but I wonder how many times this does happen? Old stars, or would-be stars who die in poverty, alone, still willing their minds to remember and stay living in their glory days.

I liked this very much. Though I feel that the beginning line is quite interesting.
She takes a glass and pours another stiff drink
This really gives it quite an interesting touch.

Brilliant read and so very poignant at the end-inevitable in many cases where fame resides.
