It Was Cold

It was cold
And so was she
Christmas past
A memory
When sons and daughters
Jumped for joy
At the perfect
Christmas toy
When Daddy stayed up
Late at night
To fix it all
And make it right

Again, she strung
The lights alone
So many years
They've all been gone
Daughter's grown

But still in town
Son's too far to
Come around
And Daddy died
One New Year's Eve
Just like yesteryear
It seems

Ages pass
In vision streams
A mother goes on
With her dreams
Of children that would
Warm her home
With laughter, love
Or even phone
Yes, it was cold
And so was she
Christmas past
A memory.

  • i'm glad i didn't read this at christmas time or i would
probably have went into a depression.let me explain.my
family has had a 40yr.tradition of gathering at midnight at
my mama's house to open presents.since 2005,we're scattered all over the country so we don't all make it anymore.this year i was one of the ones who didn't make it.
needless to say i wasn't all that merry. your poem though speaking of mother being alone, spoke to me.please don't revise.

I really love this. You did a great job of expressing strong emotion in this poem. It is so sad. I honestly can't find anything I would change.
