An Awakening

He captures my lonely presence
With the stroke of his bow
Upon the cello
His gaze holds steady,
Focused on the intricate work before him
His brow is tense, but clear of furrows
There is silence all around,
Save for the simple song
He plays into our souls
He looks up momentarily,
With eyes inflamed, enamored by the sound
His foot softly taps the ground
To keep the rhythm
He is in the Spring of youth, our cellist—
In the dawning of a beautiful life
He begs our eyes to see
Into the precious depths of his song
I obey and pierce through the layers
There is an amalgamation of beauty and darkness,
Of a sadness too deep to uncover
Here my heart falls to pieces
My eyes fill with water
And my thoughts disappear
          I have waited three years
          For this awakening
          Now it has come
          And I am satisfied
I sit as an empty shell
Being filled by his melodic light
I could weep from such beauty
Being gently planted in my soul
But the smell of yesterday’s incense
Still lingers in the air,
And the three candles near the window still burn,
Reminding me that all things come
Are present for a moment,
Then vanish again
I then remember my past
And am grateful for my present
I am young just as he
          His song is my own
We are lifted together into the air
And buried deeply within this nocturnal bliss

I stand to applaud when he has finished

Author notes

This poem came to me spontaneously as I was listening to "The Nature of Daylight" by Max Richter. It's a tremendously lovely piece. I hope everyone will give it a listen.

There is so much solace to be gathered within the lovely realm of music. It soothes and inspires us all - I believe writers garner even more peace within its presence, as the music embraces our own song.

    Outstanding

I liked the way you described your reaction to the music as if you were an empty shell and it was filling you with its beauty and sadness. I loved many of the lines here - you are very versatile as a writer and I loved how you developed the theme of this poem. You leave me in awe!

I absolutely loved this! It perfectly described the effect that beautiful music has on our hearts and souls, when we are open to it. You have written gracefully and with great insight.
