So soft the notes of winters bleak
deep carpets laden reign
to linger with its frozen touch
to sing in rimed refrain.
Dream deep of flakes in sorrowed fall
swirled carousel of white
to paint the earth, to soar the sky
to taste this bitter night.
Feel cruel the wind of deepest bite
the unfurled flowers hide
to sleep beneath its earthen sheets
in song of root untried.
Dismay the sun of solstice dream
touch sweet the eyes of spring
farewell, alas, cruel winter
I hear the swallows sing.
