Descent from Mountain

Those fingers never did quite wrap all the way around
  the corners of the paper
where the majority rested.

We never did find out the truth
about whether or not our differences where good
or if we had simply gone out
on our own
    like two young, wayward fools.

You never could sit beside me and simply feel,
as I ran my fingers through your hair
to find all the tender places
  where your secrets hid themselves.

I never could be strong enough
or enough of who I said I'd be,
no matter how many prayers half my brain prayed
to keep us in the dreams.

Our hearts never matched the way I thought they would,
  with my still-shifting sandstone center
and your heavy, granite base.

So we've grown up separate, massive;
each old mountains, with lives that no one knows,
telling old stories to travelers  passing onward,
    into the setting sun.

Author notes

Her and I held the same soul, or so I had thought early on. But even mountains that appear so similar on the outside can be massively different at the heart...so her and I grow up separate, despite my love left clinging to her like the fog that coats the Smokey Mountains on a spring morning, loathing to go though the sun will soon force it away. We change slowly, we humans, even if we are sometimes fooled into thinking we are swift. Perhaps someday her and I will find a way back to where we once were, but for now we shall tell our separate tales to those who will hear. And I, climbing my way back down from ten thousand feet, shall find the lowlands far less sweet than the heights.

The details and the story line in this poem is all so beautiful and relaxing, and best of all, it speaks to me. This is one of my very few favorites in this contest so far, so be proud
