Wild and Free

Missing image
His coat is as black as the sky of night
His eyes are as blue as the sea
His blaze is as white as the snow on the ground
He’s as wild as he is free

He stands sixteen hands as he surveys the dale
And the mares as they graze in the glen
He’s as wise as an owl in the trees up above
He is master of all he defends

He runs like the wind with his mane flowing back
And his head he holds mighty and tall
And he rears himself up in a manner of pride
As he keeps a close eye on it all

He’s a great wild stallion – a brumby of strength
He’s a God in his own special right
He lives to run free on the wide open land
Neath the sun and the moonlight of night

He’s as black as the night when the moon is asleep
And his eyes are as blue as the sea
He’s as bold as they come and when he’s on the run
He’s as wild as he is free

What is as noble or beautiful as a horse?!
What have we lost not to work and travel with horses think ,"condor": not to mention to thiink how the rare sight for anyone to see these creatures wild and free and unfettered!
A beautiful poem to these magnificent beasts!

Thank you, mate. I don't think there is anything more noble than a horse. I remember back in the seventies still waking up to the sound of horses hooves clip clopping on the roadway as the milk was delivered. It was wonderful. I often wish we could go back to those times when it was easy and slow and people were more relaxed. I love seeing wild horses just being themselves. Sadly, this is not too often these days. Need to head right up north to even see anything remotely like this, except I suppose for the high country.

In the city where I was born, as a pre-schooler,I recall horse and wagon milk delivery-
I was rather surprised this winter to see a little news report on that subject and they said that when that service ended in 1960 it wall the last of the workhorse in urban Canada.
Strangely, in such a vast country as this, there really no herds of wild horses I've heard of (of course they arn't indiginous- there are still small isolated herds of buffalo)
-except the very well known protected one of about 300 feral horse about 100 miles of the Nova Scotia coast knawn as the Sable Island ponies.

Thank you so much. I saw that picture of the horse and just had to write something on it. Perhaps I could go further with it, but you know yourself, you have to have the mood to do this or else you could ruin a piece. Your comments are much appreciated.

Fantastic! A beautiful write, full of wonderful imagery on a topic dear to my heart! Excellent rhyming and rhythm throughout. This also brings to mind The Man From Snowy River, and the son of old Regret...a very enjoyable read.

    wow wow wow,,,,

This is just top of the bill material here.
You have written an oustanding piece with a flow like any smooth running river.
The lines just fall over each other like ripples on the shore. Great picture to write on too, and you did it with pure class and style. Absolutely brilliant.

    Hey Condor

This is as great as the subject here! Beautiful cadence to rival any Swiss watch. We have an abundance of wild horses
in the Las Vegas environs and burros as well. they are managed by the Bureau of Land Mgt, State of Nevada.
Once in a while you will run across a bunch of burros in the middle of the road having a confab of sorts, and they won't budge until their business is finished.
Again, lovely poem! You are a meter maestro!

    Happy Holidays

    John

Why, thank you for your wonderful comments. The story about the burrows in the middle of the road sounds very interesting. You'll have to tell me more about them sometime.

This is a wonderful read and agreat tribute to the free roaming brumbies anywhere in Australia. Nice rhythm and flow with an unforced rhyme to give it a musical lilt. Excellent.

Thank you so much. I'd really love to actually see a brumby run but i don't think that will ever happen. Thanks so much for reading.

Wild brumbys are really beautiful to see. I have seen herds running in the outback and even in bad times they are so wonderful. They also make good stock horses when caught and broken to saddle. Smooth to ride and so very sure footed. You poem reminds me of time spent out the back of Bourke in my younger days. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks, Bob. I think i told you i would love to be able to see them running free. You'll have to add that to your book. It would be a fantastic read.
