Dear Joseph lit a candle bright
to see the babe on Christmas night
which was extinguished by Christ's light.
Dear Joseph took his pair of hose
and for the babe an outfit sewed
to keep the darling child clothed.
Dear Joseph built a sturdy home
that baby Jesus called his own
and taught his son to build and hone.

Author notes
painting is by an unknown Flemish master and depicts the legend of how Joseph sewed clothes for Jesus from his own hose; there is a relic of this in the Cathedral in Aachen, Germany. source: www.threemonkeysonline.com

I notice the blue robe.
Blue is Mary's colour, traditionally, because this hue was, for centuries, difficult to obtain for dyeing and for painting. In short, the colour was precious and reserved for the Virgin Mary.
Your 'song' here reminds me of the simplicity of Blake's "Songs of Innocence". You have brought the Joseph, the father, legend alive for allpoetry.
This is a seriously endearing piece of religious verse.
Ron.

Very interesting.
I have never heard this one before.
Thanks for entering, and the rhyme was great.

This is a neat pic of Joseph off with the baby Jesus...who goes on to rear him well, nice write.

I was hoping to hear baby Jesus exclaim: 'Hammer is for build!' having grown up under Joseph's influence. A little different than the original take that L had on the tools of man. Very interesting details of the tale, nonetheless.

What a beautiful picture, especially Mary's robe.
Merry Christmas
