On this night before Christmas
With sky a tormented grey
All the world seems to wait
For the dawn of Christmas day
While I sit and contemplate
Staring at the gloom on neigh
My heart seems destined to lose
The spirit questions with a sigh
The tree is lit with beauty
The snow falls softly, unheard
The phone doesn’t ring this night
From friends, family, not a word
Long ago, its meaning lost
Leaving mem’ries far behind
While life goes on, unnoticed
Except for the passing of time
If I could but change this night
For just one day gone by
This lonely night before Christmas
Would not leave me to question why

Author notes
I was thinking about all of the unfortunate people who have no one to share the joys of Christmas and these lines were what came forth

I kind of reminds me of lost love, but also kind of the darkness of Christmas that the world has kind of brought out at the same time.
Christmas just isn't what it should be. Well, this year it felt like that. It feels like something everybody wants, but doesn't want at the same time.
I liked your opening, it especially drew me in to explore your piece and see what it was all about.
Well penned.

I would not care to hear from relatives in the middle of the night, -- but this really would depend on the relatives and the circumstances!

And they're out there too. How compassionate to have the far less fortunite come into thoughts while all the hussle bustle of this busy season bursting. It's sad, because it seemed way back in my own younger days. People rarely overlooked those alone and without. And it takes so little ,even a warm shared meal to lift and inspire hope.Gosh,we even bought, made small thoughtful gifts for the home vendors. Such as our Manor bakery delivery guy. Likewise the Al B. Price man, milk man and the mailman. Our favorite diner waitress and just dejected looking passers by on the street.

Awesome
I have a big family on both sides and most have proven to be self centered, to themselves, my mom acts funny even, but only a great aunt of mine on my dad's and an uncle on my mom's side coorespond with me, I am the one that reaches out and because I am Christian I still do for a message but not reached back... but God has been so good, I work in a nursing home where some don't have visitors, it can be the opposite. Blessings to you.

Christmas can cast such opposite feelings,
from sad to joyous. Your words descibe
such loneliness. Would that we could
bring happiness to those who are alone
and in need of a smile.
Your night before, so well expressed.

I think I'm sort of one of those people. I don't really celebrate Christmas with anyone, but I watch old Christmas movies, eat turkey, drink Moxie and enjoy the quiet...well, except for all the voices in my head.

Merry Christmas Dee, I hope you have a great day.
