The sun has arthritis

Tonight my island froze for the first time in a hundred years.

All the cars careened off the highway
into ditches filled with empty promises
and you said you were going to bed early.

But midnight came and went and
there were no apologies and
I imagined that your ears were
empty flower vases I could fill
with the saddest daisies.

Tomorrow, the sun will return
the snow will become the happiest mud puddles
and someone, somewhere will play a guitar,
                                                                    poorly--
and people will cheer,
just to be nice.

You are always nice.

You are a silent earthquake,
                            a polite hurricane,
                                          the gentleman's tsunami.

I am a roaring butterfly,
                                a furious pond,
                                              an angry whisper.

These days all blur together.
These days it hurts to love.
These days I have snow blindness.
These days I hold my breath--
remember the days when the sun wasn't quite so old.
When I went to bed before she did.

Now the sun has arthritis and
while she complains of tendons
that ache when it rains,
I've forgotten how to run away
and how to stay still.

Now I only fall asleep to the sound of cliches,
to the sound of broken hearts, broken bones and cancer.

Sometimes the shortest days are the longest to get through but we wait for the return of the light to remind us that we are still breathing and growing and alive.

We sleep and wake to the symphony
of bus stops and broken lightbulbs,
car crashes and construction.
We hold our breath and wait.

Tonight my island froze for the first time in a hundred years.

All the cars careened off the highway
into ditches filled with empty promises
and you said you were going to bed early.

Author notes

Based on these two quotes:
☼ "It's so hard to forget pain, but it's even harder to remember sweetness.
We have no scar to show for happiness. We learn so little from peace."
— Chuck Palahniuk

☼ "Today is the sort of day where the sun only comes up to humiliate you."
— Chuck Palahniuk

    Stunning
This was not what I was expecting, and blew me right out of the water. I would say which parts were my favorite, but that's all of this piece, and I really mean it when I say you have a gifted ability to write.
