The homeless heart

When all the tears have been wept
and the soul is ready to hear
gentle words of strength
whisper piercing truths
into our bold hearts and ears.

I can not live upon a lovers cross for you.
I can not breathe a martyrs life for you.

But I can stand firmly by your side,
not under your feet,
where excuses seem to trod.

I believe you are the man
I once fell hopelessly in love…
with heartfelt dreams and trust.

Do you think we could put away
the game of blame and shame,
and find our home
within each other once again.

For I cannot ask you to bleed
upon the lovers tree for me,
and I do not believe a martyrs life
is what you seek.

I have not forgotten your tender dreams.
I am the bold woman who stands firmly
by your side….close to your heart…
Diminishing from view,
with every fifth you drink
farther n farther I disappear..
drifting away from you.

Jim Croce Song- Lovers Cross

my dear dear husband had been suffering the aching pain of
alcoholism, and prescription meds.
and for so long I thought If I could only make him ever so happy,
he would not dwell within those depths.

It wasn't until I played this song for him,
with tears of strength and compassion
in my eyes...did he understand how desperately
I loved him and needed him sober and whole
to rebuild our love. I sang right along with Jim
Croce to be sure he heard my every word.

His excuses melted away, and he did not fear rehab any longer,
for losing me and our love finally unleashed his tears.

I will forever be grateful to Jim Croce for writing this song before he died.
p.s.
Alanon was a great help!
My shoulders were getting awfully sore
carrying around that damn cross.

Oh my! I don't think I could express how much I was touched by the poem, especially with the author's note included. Stunning work.

    Spine tingling!

    I especially liked the stanza:

“Do you think we could put away
the game of blame and shame,
    and find our home
    within each other once again.”

I think it fully expresses a feeling that is usual very difficult to convey. Wonderful write!

I love this poem, it says so much about this 'issue' or 'problem' but it proves also that sometimes love can heal or pull one away from their awful interior worlds.

This is beautiful.. the words to the song and poem are very good even though the song is not my style it has great meaning behind it. The begining and ending stanzas are very strong which is good when writing a piece. Very heartfelt and true which poetry should be.
    Good luck in my contest
