i

we’d write notes on colored bits of paper and mail them to each other.

the notes would go to the post office and come home like little school
children in dirty white shirts.

"you gotta take off those muddy shoes and wash your hands first "

during lunch, we’ll smile at each other over their heads. the tableware will be
cheap and mismatched, the food full of butter. red cotton napkins will wipe
corn crumbs off curried fingers.

you’d eat jalapeno peppers till you cried.

ii

what time is it in your part of the world?

This is amazing - it really has to place.

I love that the first 3 paragraphs seem to be in the past tense and later move onto the present; it gives it a layered feel to me.

"the notes would go to the post office and come home like little school
    children in dirty white shirts."
This is the best simile I have read all day.
It's so acute...I can see the paper wearing away slightly in the time it takes to go to the post office and the children too...
fuck, this is a great simile.

"you'd eat jalapeno peppers till you cried."
You need one of those en-yay things for that 'n' in 'jalapeno'...
I'm sure there's an alt code for it.
Anyways, I love this - it gives you a description of a character w/o any details further; it's really intriguing.

    The second vignette
    is brilliant
    in its simplicity and brevity.
