What Is This Day

What is this day, 25 December,
that all rush to remember?
It's preceded by hustle and regret,
each day leading to deep debt.
So few know it was sold by ancient lies,
just glitter catching man's eyes.
Rome set and declared it our Saviour's day,
placing a price to be paid
for commercial bows of silver and gold
upon trees decked with faux snow.
The great cost paid is disobedience:
buying man's ingredients.
Oh, how low this pagan day to the sun,
a black one to God and Son;
for it is built upon false gods and lies,
yet done in God's name it flies.
Christ showed which way to go for me and you,
nothing more or less to do.
Oh, man, you send up lies in wispy smoke;
by smoke's flame you soon will choke.
Oh, how I pray, truth you will seek and find,
turning from man's wicked line—
to become always giving yet debtless,
then God will find you faultless.

Thank you, Annette. There was an incident years ago, when an avowed Wiccan laughed at a Christian co-worker and said, "I find it interesting that you observe our festivals, which simply shows me that I have the true religion, because it's the oldest one. So, I have it right and you have it wrong." It really made me think about all those years, as a kid and young adult, that we observed Christmas and Easter completely unaware of their origins. We simply took our pastor's word.
Do nothing to cause thy brother/sister to stumble. . . is our admonition for going outside God's requirements and instituting as well as observing whatever we want. As He warned the Jews long before Christ's birth, we are to do nothing more, nothing less than what He then Christ both directed.
The only festival Christ told us to observe is Passover in remembrance of Him, which is a fixed date, whereas Easter, another pagan festival to the sun god, is a floating holiday. Of course, Passover makes sense, in that it always represented the death and resurrection of Christ, even when He was only a promise.
Anyway! Good luck with your contest! I know your work will be cut out for you; after all, there are many great poets here at All Poetry.
Much love and hugs, BonnieQ
