The mind is an elephant,
gray and rough-hided,
given to stampedes
and vengeance
ah, yes,
the mind is a pachyderm,
storing even images
I’d rather not remember

Yes, they are also given to remembering the trails of their mighty ancestors, of grieving for their bones. They are prone to protecting the youngest, even giving the ultimate gift of self~sacrifice, for the sake of the herd. Incredible, my Friend.

I watched a special on elephants when I doing my scrapbooking calendars for Chrsitmas gifts and R's niece loves elephants. I was amazed to hear that elephants never forget an injsutice and when they freed an elephant cow, she went back to the village that had killed her tribe and demolished it.
Amazing aye? -

Have you ever seen the 1954 movie, "Elephant Walk", with Elizabeth Taylor & Peter Finch? He's a wealthy Ceylon plantation owner (tobacco, I think) whose property lies on a path that the elephants have used for...centuries or more, perhaps. He tries various things to alter their path, but they will NOT be moved (after all, HE is the usurper, not they). It is an interesting character study between being & beast...& guess which one is the beast? I have seen many "Nature", "Discovery" & "Animal Planet" shows that revealed the dignity, the sense of community, the compassion, the bone~deep knowledge these wonderful creatures possess. Remember, a few years ago, all these circuses were having problems with "mad" elephants attacking their handlers? Then they revealed just HOW they were being "handled". I'd have gone mad, too, with the treatment they were subjected to...& for what? Our own amusement? What a travesty, to reduce such majestic creatures to a mere caricature of themselves. They protect their young ~ less dominant females babysit all of the calves. The bulls watch over them all. They will sacrifice themselves to save the herd. And yes, the herd mourns...remembers...& revisits the site. They know the path to the only source of water in the midst of drought. Other animals follow their path, knowing this. Such marvels in Nature there are to behold. Astonishing, really. Congrats on your honor, Carol.
