Many times I’ve heard it said
When some one has died young
‘Oh, what a waste and shame it is
Their life had only just begun’
People seem to measure life’s value
By someone’s amount of years on earth
But the value of a person’s life
Should not be measured by years from birth
There are so many different reason’s why
Someone is taken from us too soon
Sometimes accident, war or illness
And that’s naming just a few
There are also many in this world
Whose souls are of the gentle type
They find the world around too hard
With all its busyness rush and hype
There can be so many different reasons
But the outcome is oft the same
The sadness of those left behind
And sometimes, even shame,
But a person’s worth and value
Lies not in the years they have lived
It’s that they were worthy of the love of others
And that they themselves, had love to give.

Perfect. This reminds me of the poem "The Dash" a little and has its same profound truth. It's not how long we live but how well, and how kindly.
Hope all is well with you and the wee'uns. I've been working pretty much incessantly lately. Not much time for anything else. It's nice to take a minute to catch up with your writing. Your poems have all the qualities I appreciate in good poetry - they have meter, they tell a story, they have a message/point, and I don't need to read it ten times to get it (and then only maybe. lol)
Take care,
M

Thanks Mark, I wrote this one specifically for a lady at work who's son had died, i gave it and your "How We Survive" poem to her with her Christmas card, as i suspected your poem had the greater impact on her but i'm happy with that, I said that you were my 'mentor' and that I so wish you lived in Australia. She asked me to tell you that your poem has done great things for her. She also copied it and gave it to someone else, I suspect that happens a lot with your poems! March 22 I leave for LA Mark, MARCH 22!!!!!! I went and organised my passport today.
