It’s Christmas Eve way past first dark
Fresh cookies lay on Santa’s plate
A small note scrawled with childish mark
They sent to bed long fore too late
So now begins the complex work
As we prepare tomorrow’s dawn
Reports that men can go berserk
Assembly takes much more than brawn
Tonight deserts are baked by Mom
As meals she planned will start first light
Dad stays away though she seems calm
And bites his lip as words seem trite
Try to recall where presents hid
To lay them out leave passage clear
Preparing for one sleepy kid
Sure glad it’s only once a year
Check then your list not once but twice
With coffee clock prepared just right
A bite of cookie should suffice
With more eggnog to be polite
With Maw in nightgown, off to bed
In skivvies I checks one more time
Trying to think what she last said
Now time for me in bed to climb
My mind does race but drift to sleep
The day’s been long and need the rest
I lost my count on small white sheep
Then hear small boy on Santa quest

Real Christmas Eve…

Author notes
Christmas means so much to children who do not know rich or poor. They only know the love and joy we give them

Jim I know this is belated but I trust you had a good Christmas with your family. Nice job on this poem. I liked the notes that you shared. Hope to hear from you real soon....all my best!

I thorougly enjoyed this poem, Jim. I always get a chuckle when we struggle for hours to assemble something, then a kid comes along and does it in seconds.
I suppose this highlights how children readily and quickly assimilate everything around them, while we adults have absorbed so much over the years that now days we tend to ignore: our mind not quite on the task at hand.
Well done and best wishes! BonnieQ

Yes, I agree with you
Kids are amazing.
I just met my second Great Grandson. I should be able to show him how to fish before I go.
Thank you for your lovely comment.

Oh, you've got those, too!
I have twin great grandsons and one great granddaughter (she's not quite 2yo yet). Where did all the years go? Worse, when did my kids and grandkids grow up!

Efforts like this would seem to indicate some little ones you know get those "love and joy" gifts all year round Jim.
It takes a lot to give a lot (of time and effort not money) and you seem to have described it just right.
BTW
I really liked that penultimate line
"I lost my count on small white sheep"
Nice touch.
All the best for 2009

Beautiful
This was wonderful! I enjoyed it from start to finish.
Men can go berserk from assembly! This was precious!!!
Little ones make it that way!
I could feel it all as I read!
Thank you so much for entering it!
Smiles..............
