Just Breathe.

 4 times I've kissed
the gaping maw of death,
one covered in a

wash of blood,
from a armless face plant
into concrete.

I can still taste the coppery

tang of it on my lips.
Begging someone,
anyone to get me a towel,
to clear the blood
so that I could

help him breath.
but he was dead
before he hit the ground,
my efforts were wasted,
but how could I let
a man die, when I
knew how to help him.

Another was just
a two year old,
with no known reasons
for her failure to breath,
tiny lips pressed to mine,
tiny breaths blown,
and gentle heart massage
so as not to break
the fragile ribs,
tiny eyes fluttered,
and I cried,
for she came back,
to embrace life, and me.

The next was a
strong black man,
who just keeled over,
on my watch,
I beat on his chest,
and blew prayers
into his lungs,
but he was gone,
Massive stroke.
I removed a

pack of camels
from his shirt pocket,
sadly shaking my head,
as I tossed them
into the trash,
while his stretcher
rolled away.

The last was a boss,
in a grocery store,
I came in from making rounds
and a crowd of people,
were standing around
watching him turn blue.
He had choked on
some corn on the cob,
and was dying.

I screamed at
the penguin crowd,
"What the hell's
the matter with you people!"
As I pounded him
on the back,
and cleared his throat
with my fingers,
and then put him
into a Heimlich maneuver.
Then he expelled
the blockage of corn
forcefully all over the crowd,
I just smiled,
as they all finally jumped
while he gasped
a most precious
breath of air.

Take a CPR course,
learn what you need to do,
What if it were your mother?
your lover, your husband?
your wife, your baby?
Are you gonna stand
there and watch them die?
God I hope not.

Believe me,
the guilt eats at you,
when someone dies
in front of you,
even after you have
done all that you could.

Two hours of training
versus a lifetime lost.
You do the math.

Excellent poem and excellent message. Everyone should learn to use CPR. I have taken the course several times, but never have been...is the word lucky?...enough to use it. This is an excellent reminder that everyone needs to take CPR.

    Good job! Write on, poet.

    Blessings,
    Myth
P.S. There is a typo in the 2nd stanza. I am sure you meant the word "break" but left out the "r"

    A most humble poetical ...

plea for life-giving manuevers and well-shared from your personal point of view. It certainly kept my attention as I read each case and though the title made me think it was about your life, I quickly realized that it was about your life to save lives.

Nicely done! and you seem to be in the right places at the right time! jy

This is very good! I really have no suggestions on how to improve it... CPR is a very helpful thing to know and you highlighted that very well in your poem.

this was amazing! so true and powerful are your words. I have been a nursing assistant in the past and renewed my CPR/first aid certificates several times. with 3 kids and my husband disabled, I never know when either or both of those skills may be needed. everyone should be trained to do this.

I took the CPR training when I was in high school. Three years after that, I applied the Heimlich maneuver to my ex-bf, because he was choking with a piece of meat. It surely was a life-saver.

    ''Two hours of training
    versus a lifetime lost.
    You do the math.''

That last stanza says it all, my friend.

You better be careful. I hear in California, Good Samaritans can be sued. I hear there's and old biddie out there saying: "I was better off in a blazing inferno waiting 90 minutes for the fire department, than have you risk life and limb to pull my ungrateful @$$ out...! Gimme your life savings and let me ruin your life. This'll teach you to help others out!" LOL Love the write, bro.
