I.O.U

You may have thought that I forgot,
Or that it slipped my mind.
The life lessons that you've taught
Have not been left behind.

Perhaps you thought I didn't hear,
Or know what the words were for.
But Dad, I always hold them near,
I hold them in my core.

Soon I'll have a daughter, too,
And I know that I can say,
Parenthood won't be half as bad,
Because you paved the way.

I'll have to give an I.O.U,
My present is pretty far-
You'll have to wait a century or two
To get your shining star.

Author notes

I wrote this for my Dad on his birthday, before I had Kai. I feel the need to explain the last stanza. When I was a little girl (I think I was four at the time), my Dad and I had come back from an outing. I fell asleep in the backseat, so he was going to carry me in. I woke up when he picked me up, and I looked up at the sky and said, "Daddy, I want to be a pilot when I am older." He asked me why, and my response was, "So that I can go into the sky and bring you back a star." It's always stuck with me, and especially with him.

What a lovely story. It touches me so because I lost my Dad five years ago and am only just now getting used to the idea. Thank you for entering such a nice piece. Shancy.

wow. this is a beautiful tribute to your father, and hearing the story behind it made it that much more powerful.

though i'll bet the young woman you have become and your daughter have been gifts enough.

i love the idea of littlefishone below me as well... that story would make a wonderful little picture book!

    anyways, lovely poem.

    What a super sweet poem!

I love this one Simone. This a great poem. The personal ones are usually the best. They come from the heart. Really, really great.
