Black Devil

Hello Mrs. God,
I found you in a light bulb
behind a soggy, old box
in an alley, covered in cat piss,
and probably human piss, too.

My wife kicked me out after
I worshiped a faucet
dripping shards of glass.
I tried to cut the devil out of me
and fill the tub with "holy water"
but blood isn't divine.

Now I'm filling my stomach
with battery acid
while I beg for the sun,
and write prayers on napkins
in bathroom stalls,
because I can't afford paper.

Maybe I'm black and Jewish,
living below the Hill somewhere in Harlem
where white men read Dickens and
black, civil women read Angelou,
while I'm reading RIP signs
in graveyards at the edge of my fingers.

I'd love to live in Cambridge, where
the real men are -
but I'm not really a man of any
notability,

I'm a sinner,
what with being black

and talking to rats
squeaking in cardboard brains.

I hear violin music every once in a while
praising the end of the world,
coming from pretty little boxes,
Manhattan homes - big and tall

and Harlem holes - ruddy and small,
where muddy children crawl and cry
and complain.  Maybe
we're "neglected" by the rich white folk
up that hill

who sing hallelujah to their fish
and yell at their mirrors,

maybe it's they who have the devil in them.

who sing hallelujah to their fish
and yell at their mirrors - just one of many lines dripping with socio political satire.

excellent write and congrats on the hm deserving of more.

I would work a bit with the lines from the middle on, the breaking of them I mean -

    otherwise very well done.
