Wounded Dove

A dove bounced off the window
and limped with wounded wing,
then looked at me with angry eyes
and then began to sing

“Oh, why have you forsaken me
and left me all alone?
While you recline in comfort
on your patent leather throne?

What have I done that I must bear
your bitter hate and scorn?”
The dove cooed softly, stared at me
while looking all forlorn.

I took a breath in sorrow
and then in frustration sighed.
I know that I cannot explain it,
but, at least I tried.

“You wanted glass between us
from our very meeting day.
Then many times it suited you
to simply fly away.

Your feathers are so lovely
and your song I so adore,
I simply am not waiting in
this window anymore.

You wanted glass between us
and your wishes I abide.
You can’t expect I’ll stand here
while you fly around outside.

So, as you count your sorrows
I implore you not forget,
on many an occasion
we have sung a fine duet.

But, if you truly search your heart
I’m certain that you know,
the edges of the glass are
just as far as we can go.

Then you will go back to your nest
or hang out with your flock
as I stand in the window alone
listening to the clock..

That’s not the life I’m looking for,
it’s no reflection of,
the way I feel about you
or the value of our love.

It was your choice to separate us
by this pane of glass
and I am truly sorry it has
knocked you on your ass.

Yet, what I do not understand
is how you’ve come to see
this window pane between us
as a problem caused by me.”
