Why, just this morning – what a gas
to watch your sleeping cherub's rise
and fall of chest and then your eyes
spring open like a shade snaps back,
your drowsy baby's breath, your laugh,
your chubby cheeks, your sparkling face
all lit up in expectant haste
to get the advent calendar
and open up that door ajar.
Author notes
she always peeks at the advent calendar to see what's coming next, hence the door ajar, and it's the last thing she mentions before going to sleep and the first thing upon waking each morning this month. She is just learning to count, so she asks what's eins plus eins, etc. to figure out the dates or checks with me, "Tomorrow is the eighteenth, right?" (only she says "eighth" in German because she hasn't figured out how to add the teenth in dates yet); she has it all calculated down to the detail that on Saturday she is due a Kinderegg (special chocolate egg with a surprise inside.)

Anticipation was so cute...I always loved advent when the Christ candle was the only thing left to light and everything is now there, gifts I mean! Blessings

-
what is advent? but i love this poem, it's so adorable and lovely

This one could be called Addvent. An extra 'd' to make up for the missing 'n' in Innuendo. Where was your Multiplication Table Poem again?

Really first rate!
Aside from making my eyes water in the recollection my infant daughter rousing from sleep (forty eight years ago), your artful use of language here is just superb; in particular from the end of line 2, "what a gas..." through, "...shade snaps back."

I do enjoy reading these poems about your child. They remind me of the ones I write about Gage. Best wishes in the contest sweetie.
