The Day the Roses Died

As the years pass by and the seasons change
things at Grandpa's house are never the same.
Us kids still play our games of whiffle ball in the court.
Me and Elizabeth still scale the sky-scraping trees,
but Nana's garden doesn't grow anymore.

The front yard is devoid of her ivory white lilies
and a rainbow of carnations no longer frames the back porch.
She'll never see
how that tiny tree
she planted in the back has grown.
Amidst the thick, somber air, it stands alone.

Down
upon the ground
are scattered petals of a crimson red rose
that no longer grows.

Nana can't save it anymore
its left to its own.
Everyday its battered, beaten, and trampled by strong winds and bumbling feet.
If only the garden would grow.

Even the bees merely fly by.
Wilting, as nothing pollinates it
the beautiful rose slowly dies.

Then one day in its final hour,
a bright white light
came down on the little flower.

The sun shone through the clouds.
and the air was warm.
So the remarkable plant began to bloom
because it had weathered every storm.

Although the garden may be gone,
the real challenge has just begun.
Sometimes it will rain sometimes it will snow
only one things for sure
one single little rose
still
grows.

  • It's beautiful -

I am so sorry for your loss... - we've heard that a million times.. and yet, so long as we know it's coming from those who do understand it's so good to hear....

    You write of hope,
    you'll need that.

    - wishing you the best,
    ~*SL*~
