May we be the trees
of many rings
yet supple limbed and strong
to stand the testing winds
drink rain, hold sun in seasons
so many reasons find us here
connected like roots and black earth
we, the green trees of the world
together...we breathe sweetest air

Brevity at its best

When a sapling, limbs held close, roots still shallow, I couldn't understand the groaning and whispering of the trees. I reached higher and higher, not knowing exactly what it was that I was reaching for, dug deeper and deeper, not knowing what I was digging for and with each stretch of praise and each contemplation of earth, a new ring was mine.
Now a tree, I've found a light above the canopy that warms my limbs and feeds my soul. I still don't know what I am reaching for or why I have expanded my excavations of earth and entangled my roots with many others... All I know is that there is more... all the trees know that there is more, it's what we're whispering about in summer and groaning about in winter
I'll someday trade all my rings to learn the ultimate secret, but not yet... I'm still enjoying the journey.
A very inspiring write.
s and best wishes always... ~Genie~

Yes, the journey...I agree there is joy there like the sunshine after the storms, warming of spring after winter, soft winds of summer, we earn these rings by our persistence but we can remember and hold the happiness for all of our seasons... thank for all...PK

Thank you Liz-
for your wonderful words, happy birthday to you, and the best to you and your family in the holidays and the new year... it seems you have a lot to be thankful for in this season of thankfulness... many blessings ...and even more, the ability to appreciate them. Thank you for the honor of the Gold... PK

I love the way this metaphorical poem began - almost like a prayer. We are all connected, both the fauna and the flora, with roots to hold us and limbs to feel the air. The ending is beautiful. Thank you for your entry. Peace, Liz

yes. "drink rain, hold sun in seasons"

Quite a unique way to relate age of human beings with age of trees, the rings...and not only the age, but what we and the tress stand for, or supposed to.
I liked that idea very much, nicely done here Howard
