Jenny

Birds sing and the world turns and turns but
each and every turn seemed to turn you my way.

My Ragged Penny,
you stormed around
breathlessly
but,
your second hand
ran out of breath
when I had time for you.

Fights for respect no guarantee of life tomorrow.
No rules in a struggle to the death.

Solace in my simultaneous release.

'Dani California' is a surprisingly common story.

I think you've been a little bit tough here, but I love this poem. Thanks for sharing this poem. It helps because you're telling her what she needs to know. Very cool.

OMG I wondered if anyone would ever say those words lol..it is a common story, so many see Kiedis writing it from the point of view of drugs and rock n roll and he didn't. Loved your take on this. thanks C

Yes. It's odd that people think of him as the rebel even though RHCP is part of the stable commercial mainstream, but that's part of why I wrote it this way. The fact that the moon orbits the earth doesn't mean that the earth is stationary. Relationships are relative. DC is essentially the same story as Forrest Gump with the heat turned up a bit, so I thought it would be fun to make my interpretation be a series of pop-culture allusions, hence the title. The birds is obvious. 'Ragged Penny' is an allusion to the Horatio Alger myth. The second hand alludes to Grace Slick's description of Jim Morrison's death. 'Respect...' is an anti-sentiment of recent Latin gangsta rap, while 'No rules' channels Che, whose words cut both ways, i.e., you can attack society, but it will fight back. The end is obvious again; it's hard to love a meteor or a stick of dynamite with lit fuses at both ends.

Thanks for running this. It turned out to be a fun idea. Some of the songs (esp 'Untitled') shook the cobwebs off some dusty old memories.
