Her aged movements slowed and faltered
as she brushed through her fine grey hair
her deep gaze lost within the mirror,
recalling the girl that used to be there.
A misty vision came slowly to her memory
a young girl blessed with beauty and grace
long ringlets then hung round her shoulders,
twinkling eyes and not a flaw to her face.
Wandering through clouded memories,
the sparkling necklet she wore caught her eye
a tear slipped down her cheek in silence
then echoed on her breath with a sigh.
She remembered the day that he placed it
so gently to her throat, with such care,
vowing his place would ever be beside her,
and proudly to her, his love did declare.
The reflection in the mirror misted over
but from it, could not draw her eyes away
as she struggled through mental treasures
waiting the next vision the mirror to display
Once again the reflection became clearer,
she reappeared now dressed as his bride
The gold band felt so warm on her finger
as they stood there, in love, side by side.
Her eyes closed for a while as she languished
in the joy they had shared, man and wife
rejoicing the news, when they together,
were blessed with creating a new life.
A gentle smile crossed her face as she pondered
when a suckling child, was revealed, at her breast,
so innocent and in comfort he lay there
not knowing the path his future possessed.
Many images passed through the mirror
of the child, as he grew through the years
she recalled each one as she watched them
her tired old eyes now brimming with tears.
She recalled they day they'd departed,
father and son, marching off side by side
called to arms to defend their coutry
which filled her heart so full of pride.
Heartache struck and clutched at her bosom
tears coursed their tired way down her face
when before her in the glass of the mirror
the letter telling of death and of lives replaced.
Sobs shook through her body, unrelenting,
as the coffins lowered to the gaping hole
the mirror image froze, as reaching towards her
arms drew her forward and took control.
Her body filled with sweet love and contentment
willing to be with the man she adored
and as his warming embrace she accepted
her life spent, the mirror crashed to the floor.

This is lovely Ann! Long lost memories coming to life for her to re-live once again, happiness, extreme sadness and grief all there in her mirror of life.
It's an amazing experience to be told by an aged person that they actually want to die, that they feel it's their time to go, each having their own individual reasons. Your poem has explained some of those reasons.

Really sweet poem! One thing I noticed, the rhyming scheme isn't so great. Otherwise you did very well writing this!
