when sheer despair leads one a body to sell
to feed the crack ache inside
"no condom, no problem," she will tell
so few dollars, for long ago all her hope died
ignorance spreads like a virus along with fear
the true plague: diseased states of the mind
to rape a virgin child for cure when death seems near
information witheld in bigotry, as the blind lead the blind
i love him and beg and plead, "please don't take such chances"
as he sweats awaiting results of his latest test
"please cover all your dances
so in peace you dwell and dream rather than the peace of eternal rest"
Jesus forgotten in purtitan ethic of religious right
abandoned is true love in exalting their own sect
doom and corrupt more souls as God you surely smite
Remember not the teachings as your selfish empire you erect
but, when Jessie Helms apologized hope-tears filled my eyes
redemption on horizon, a few glimpses see
love is fun and love seems free
to those suffering in extreme poverty
how to shake complacency: Hear the cries?
Humanity! Blessed be...
Wake UP! LOOK at this African child surrounded by flies!
when compassion recedes as human judges deem
who is to live and who may die in our vain
decades later, crisis like atomic bombs and fallout
does seem
God's weeping, as the rain
from the rooftops SHOUT:
pray for those with AIDS/HIV
pray for a magic pill
and especially pray for the hate-filled enemy
as mounds of earth we grow ever more still

For personal reasons (which I am presently working on through my 12-Step Program) I was first shocked, taken aback and fially accepted the title. Anything religious (not spiritual) sort of halts me at the present moment. but this does not mean that I will not venture in and read it, perhaps I will be enlightened, which is precisely what happened here.
This poem is pure rage and activism. The allusion of HIV and lepers is not new, but is shown in a new light here. One would have to visit the rurals of Africa, the crack houses, the decay of the American dream by walking the deserted suburbs and backroads and witness it first hand.
I preferred you other one entered in this contest to thisone. Perjhaps I need to look at it again in a few days and internlize more of the subject.
Thank you once again for contributing to this contest.

I totally agree with my co-host. You touched on many subjects that should be addressed. People are people and we should not boast our ego's by judging them..Well written..
Thank you for the entry and good luck.
Soulful Woman -
You touched on a lot of subjects here. From prostitution to AIDS in Africa and religion. You would think with all that subject matter it would be jumbled or the rhyme would be lost...but not with this piece everything was in order and made perfect sense all the way to the end! I offer congrats and much thanks for entering this piece into the contest. Good luck!
