Twenty-Five Years Ago

Twenty-five years ago
a monster arrived,
sickening people of every size,
shape, color, race, and sex.
The homosexuals, the bisexuals,
and the straight,
it did not discriminate.
It passed through bodily fluids,
a needle, wound to wound,
not through the tenderness
of a touch, kiss or hug.
To date, there is no soon end
of the plague that AIDS has come to be.

Twenty-five years ago,
it was not said to be
just that of a druggie
or gay man's disease.
We in this world,
have stereotyped it.

Learn the facts before you speak;
and remember those that lost their fight,
like Liberace, Robert Reed,
Rock Hudson and Ryan White.

Author notes

Think I may tweak... not sure... I wrote what I was feeling at the moment.
I had met Ryan White a couple times, and those couple times he made me feel
like I had known him for his lifetime. AIDS is a monster. I don't know if this
is contest worthy, so please let me know.

Thanks for reading

You have manaed to capture the ambiance of the times twenty-five years ago along with the social issues surronding the pandemic.

I would improve this poem by its flow. In some places it jars the reader and after looking over it I discovered it was losing its cadence in some ares of the poem so if I may be so bold to offer my interpretation:

Beautifully written to make people more aware of how it can strike any one, even the new born innocent child. You are obviously a very aware and caring person.

    Good Poem

Nicely written. The message is really strong and it has good point with the whole "steriotype" thing. I don't know anyone with AIDS but this poem really made me feel more towards those who do. Good job.

I love this because it speaks so clearly of the discrimination that accompanies an Aids diagnosis. Hate and ignorance are never healing, and yet, Aids patience must deal with it daily.
    Great job!

Very well done. We cannot forget. I just found out that I am HIV positive this year. I am in a very low risk catagory. It affects us all. Thank you.

    Superb plus

Thank you for writing this I had 15 friends who died from that monster. I know that AIDS never discriminates it doesn't matter anyone can catch it, if they are not careful. A very poignant write indeed, for those of us who prayed at the bedsides of their dying friends.
