My Cat Luke

Missing image
My little cat is black not white
He sleeps all day and he hunts all night
He howls at the moon when the moon is high
And checks me out with a cheeky eye

He flicks his tail as he heads to door
Then turns around and gives me more
He’s got eyes that are wise and green
And an attitude like you’ve never seen

He roams the house like he owns it all
And never comes when I give the call
He opens doors then he runs away
And hides on me cause he wants to play

When the Tele’s on he makes a scene
Plonks right down in front of the screen
He turns his head as he checks me out
Raises his brow and ups his snout

Frowns at me when the food is late
Then walks away with a haughty gait
Takes my chair when I want to rest
Cause he thinks he should have the best

Stares down dogs at the garden path
Sneers at them when they start to bark
He wakes me up in the dead of night
Cause he thinks he should - cause he thinks it’s right

He tries to get to the window ledge
And he thinks it’s fun to use my head
As a stepping stone for him to cross
He lets me know who he thinks is boss

He catches mice and he brings them in
And he thinks that I should welcome them
And if I start to read a book
He gives me such a dirty look

Up he gets and he comes my way
And flicks his paw to turn the page
And satisfied that he was right
He wanders off into the night

And come the morning when I rise
He’s sitting staring in my eyes
As if to say – you know my friend
It’s time to start it all again

Thank oyu. Luke was a beautiful black siamese cross. I got him when he was just a kitten in the pet store. My dad use to have breakfast with him every morning, giving him a saucer of tea. He adapted my dad as his best friend. He lived well into his nineteenth year. He use to do these things and much more and always made us laugh.

Thanks, mate. Luke was my male cat who died in the mid 90's. He was a treasure and my father loved him when he was alive. I still miss him so much, as with all my cats and birds i have had over theyears.

I wish I could describe the world around me with such a magnificent eye. It's as if everything you see is so much more vivid than the drab contrast I witness. You make me want to seek out every detail of each matte finish on the barest technologies I have before me right now.

And your use of "Tele" is something I didn't expect to read in this world where everyone just calls it the TV.

Thank you for your wonderful comments and taking the time to read my poems. Luke was easy to write about. He was such a character. We always call it the 'tele' here.

Our cats seem to have their own personality! Mine would jump up against the screen door when he wanted in...and would like his mother bring the innards of gophers to the front porch...A gopher eater...So all through the poem, I was amused..Such a wonderful humorous write, delightful! Good flow!

    the cat's meow!

I've written two cat poems for sabrina
and Spooky but Luke is more interesting.

Thanks, mate. I wouldn't mind reading them. Cats are real characters, aren't they.

A cat without just a little attitude might as well be a dog, but I've yet to see a cat that has that royal air about them that hasn't been affectionate, too. I had two darling kittens a few years ago that were solid black, and they were twins--Elijah and Buddha. I have four cats now, two Mackerel tabbies, a Persian, and a longhair mix. Ollie, Hallie, Scout, and Milo are always competing for Top Feline around the home. Luke's antics sound a lot like my own fur babies' antics.

I enjoyed reading this immensely, and I admittedly laughed several times throughout as I read it. That last line couldn't be more true!

    Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, mate. Yeah I love cats to. I had four that all lived well into their 19th year. Two males and two females and I still miss them. Luke was the one with the biggest character though. He ruled for sure. He was my dads best mate.

Thanks, Laura. My Luke looked a lot like the cat in the picture, except a fair bit older and very bold. Glad you liked it.

Ah, 'tis a fine write. Imagery; rhythm and rhyme are just fine. Thanks for sharing this one with us. I also love cats, although, at present, I do not have one. You might enjoy my poem, "Whimsical Kittens Philosophy". Here's a link to it:

Thank you. I love cats. Had three and they all lived to the ripe old age of 19. Not bad for a cat, hey?

Thanks, mate. Sadly i lost Luke in the 90's. He died of liver failure. At 19, i think he had a wonderful life and lived it to the full. He was my dads best friend until my dad died. Somehow, i think he missed him.

Thanks, mate. Yeah. I modelled this one after my cat...Luke. He was a real beauty with a real attitude and my dads best friend. He sadly died in the mid 90's and even now, i miss him. He didn't give a hoot about anything, but he was always very loving.

My cat, Luke described him to a tee. He was a beauty. Died aged 19. He had what one might described as a real shitty attitude problem. I am glad you liked it.
