I know the midnight approaches
I sense the void
the darkness in your eyes
I will not forsake it
although maybe I'm mistaken
but my pride cannot afford surprise
your touch no longer lingers
your kiss has lost it's warmth
orphaned in frigid wastelands
abandoned in the storm
The arrangement was for espousal
for better, for worse
The sweet by and by
but the best laid plans
of mice and men
often go awry
Bewitched by the possible certainty
of public humiliation
Petrified by the certain possibility
of personal degradation
I proudly end what we began
so many, many years ago
trying to beat you to the punch
and sadly let us go
Through tear filled eyes
I discovered
much, much too late
that she was never leaving me
It was cancer
taking her away

Oh My!
The last line left me with my mouth agape. How sad. Even in the loss of death, there is anger and always grief. We suffer seven stages of grief when we lose someone we love. Seems yours are all wrapped into one well-written poem. This is great musing poet. The sadness here is engulfing.
Much Love & Many Blessings ♥
Renee
