The scene is a musty, smoke filled barroom. The beer has flown freely and a discussion is underway among a trio of stoic individuals. The autocrat of the table, novelist and statesman, Albion Tourgee takes time to reminisce.
Tourgee: Yes, I wrote, Bricks without Straw. It was topical...the Reconstruction that was taking place in the south. I had a duty to explain it to the populace.
Slug: Plhat, plash, plish, squish
Ham Sandwich:
Tourgee: They saw me as a carpetbagger, but I was no such thing. I was simply a man with a sense of honor and duty to his country. I saw an opportunity and seized it.
Slug: Phlat, squish, phlat
Ham Sandwich:
Tourgee: Yes, that's right, A Fool's Errand was seen as a supporting work (as was Thomas Dixon's The Clansman) for the Ku Klux Klan. I don't apologize for anything that I have written.
Slug: Pthit, Plat, Sclug
Ham Sandwich:
Tourgee: Of course Racism played a major role in the South's reluctance to accept Reconstruction. I finally had to accept that this was true and that my writing would be seen by those so inclined, to support their opinions.
Slug: Squish, squirm, splut.
Ham Sandwich:
Tourgee: (Noticeably inebriated) I love you guys! But, darn it, I wish I hadn't quit college and joined the Union Army. Why, why, why?
Slug: Slurg, plunk, splink.
Ham Sandwich: (Tips over in its plate.)
