I Got Your Faithful Branch Right Here

Missing image
Hey.  Yeah, it's me - the Christmas tree.
What's that? Surprised to hear from me?
Well, I've been quiet as long as I can be.
Now you're gonna sit and listen, see?

Once again, it's that darn time of the year
When you humans, full of Christmas cheer,
Pick up axes and fill the woods with fear
And make one of my relatives disappear.

And what's it for? What does it all mean?
Why play out the same old, sad routine?
You seem so nice in the months between.
Why does Christmas make you all so mean?

And when it's all over and the lights go out,
What do WE have to be cheerful about?
We're dumped at the curb, doing without,
While in the warm house, you happily shout,

"Merry Christmas to all and a happy new year!"
Alone and abandoned, we shed a silent sap tear,
As we lay waiting for the wood chipper with fear,
Thinking, "I got your faithful branch right here!"

ahhh you won the silver? geeeze that was brilliant! fantastic pen!
next time someone says something negative to me, i might just have to say, "I go your faithful branch right here!"

    hahahahahaha i loved this.

  • If this poem(which I'm reading way past Xmas) says anything about your writing then, I know I'm in for a treat.
I'm laughing my butt off. I love the opening line and the finishing line. Love the whole thing.

many trees are murdered for the sake of a greedy holiday. I like your words. I like the picture. I like the snow.

Months past Christmas & I was lmao

Missed you and your words....and the smiles you gave me....and the tears, sometimes. Happily, this was a laughter rather than a tears visitation with you. I'm still a bit tender for the rougher stuff as yet.
Nice light poem with that punny wit shining through. Not the greatest rhyme scheme you've ever wrought, but I know that's not what this one was about. I liked it....that's all.

As we lay waiting for the wood chipper with fear,
Thinking, "I got your faithful branch right here!"

I like the poem. I remember the contest; didn't enter, but I put the image as wallpaper on the computer. It lasted about 10 minutes before the wife returned the grandchildren to much bluster...

Great idea. I name my Christmas trees so they feel better, and am always sad to see them go.

    Good take on holiday spirit.

A very fine write, indeed. I liked the wry, satirical tone of this humorous poem. Thanks for sharing it with us.

lol. you wrote a great piece and i can so relate to trees' feelings. it's sad that christmas trees are killed just for our enjoyment. plastic trees are worse, too. i'd recommend a living plant and use it to decorate for christmas season, then take off and the plant still lives for years to come. congratulations on winning a silver cup. thanks for sharing.

The background is superb, but a little bit distracting - though this was a generally light poem, so it wasn't too big of an issue. You definately deserved your win; and thank you for sharing!

Well hello Mark. How have you been, long time no read. i see you're just as humorous as ever. And where would we be without the words that bring us laughter? LOL!! This is very funny. It's strange, my roommate and I were car searching today, when I spotted a Christmas tree just lying on side of the road. I said " Look, someone just threw their damn tree out on side of the road".

Humour with a lot of message to it. I have always used a fake fir, and the one I used this year was the best! It has come out so grand on the wedding pictures!!! lol!

I think this is a very deep and cleverly written poem. Congrats on the silver, hope you had a great Xmas this year, and hope 2009 is being good to you.

    Love and light,

I think this is quite humorous in that curmudgeonly way that some trees have about them. So don't feel bad and Congrats on the silver!

    Ho! ho! ho!
Now here's what I call, the other side of it!
You got me interested by that "humor" category and expecting to read one... it is indeed funny but it is also the sad reality.
The message, the rhyme, the simplicity, the impact... this goes into my list.
    Thank you for joining.

very good, Mark! Kinda makes you want to enjoy the Christmas fish sticks, no? As usual your work explores the dramatic sadness of life quite well. And the rhythm here (now just you let me say this!) is quite good, only having a slight hiccup. All in all a beautiful piece! Good job!! - ocerus

Lol, this ought to bring a little Christmas cheer. It did for me. Rhyming all the lines in a quatrain is a pretty good feat in itself. That picture is priceless. Enjoyed. Take care and Merry Christmas. Steve

    cute

I think the trees are curious to see what is in the houses...

We started buying live trees and planting them after Christsmas. Have about a 50% success rate.

lol... Awesome write from the tree!!
I use Artificial... less likely to catch fire... no mess.. and I don't want to cut a tree down.

Loved the rhyme, loved the attitude of the tree...speaking on behalf of all his brothers. Very well penned, friend.

    I enjoyed reading you!
    Good luck in the contest

We've got to 'think green' and leave the Christmas trees be.
Artificial is the way to go, and while you're at it,
    add some fake snow!

    Enjoyed your poem, Mark!

Made me feel bad for the Christmas trees,
torn from their homes, placed in hot houses,
    often not watered,
admired, not for themselves, but for the
    ornaments and Christmas lights weighing
on each branch, then cast aside like
    yesterday's newspaper.

    What a sad fate!

    I love trees..that's why I leave them
in the ground where they can thrive
and grow and have long lives.

    Oh, Christmas tree,
    Oh, Chritmas tree,
    how wonderful your branches!

Think green! Save a tree today!

    Maureen

I think your poem is delightful and you express the outrage of a soon to be "Dead Tree Talking" beautifully. LOL I see we're on the same wave length with our writes and I especially love the last line "I got your faithful branch right here!" That is hilarious. Good luck in the contest you've done a great job. Happy Holidays and God Bless, Jo-Ann

Awwww! Poor Christmas tree. I am not putting one up this year. We hung ornaments from the bottom of the holly tree in the front yard and wrapped Christmas lights around the trunk. Its own pretty berries will far outlast the holidays. I never get tired of the bright red cheer during the wintry gray days.

    Thanks for the laughter.

I could hear your voice narrating this sad (and funny) tale of the poor mistreated XMas Tree
