now and then I try to remain impassive.
it’s very hard when my life is always spinning
out of control faster than a black hole, and when
it’s orbiting him. him, being the one that shines
brighter than that dazzling star you always see
when looking into the sky.
now and then I try too hard to be perfect.
but I always fall flat on my face
because of the serious distraction
you pose for me with the twinkling
of the green globes called your eyes.
now and then I try to be beautiful.
beauty was something I wasn’t born with,
even though you tell me thousands of times
each day that I’m prettier than the moon and
more vivid than the sun. you were more
obsessed with looking out into space than I was;
and almost every day in summer we would lie in
your backyard on the damp grass with your hands
around my waist, but your mind somewhere else
up in space.
my beauty was never good enough for you
and you were always a better liar than the
people on the weather network who always
say that it is going to be alright even though
the clouds are hanging over our heads, and the
sky is obviously going to cry. we weren’t meant
to be together.
now and then I remember last summer.
your hands never once leaving mine, your
face always in my hair while telling me how
lovely I smelled that day, and kissing the top
of my forehead and slowly moving down
towards my lips.
now and then those memories seem more
like shadows than real thoughts and I’m
beginning to wonder if it was all a dream.
the way you treat me now, as if I’m nothing
less than a fallen star that crash-landed on a
planet that she shouldn’t belong on.
