I knew the deepest of affection
Entwined with bittersweet remorse;
The winds would howl and change direction,
But never threw these friends off course.
I can not say that they were flawless
But tragedy is sweet and fair.
And even diamonds are not flawless
And they, to rubies, did compare!
The first I met was just a small boy
But grew into a famous king.
He set aside his fancies, rage, joy,
To bring an end to evil things.
The second wasn't fair to look on,
But deep within him burned a light.
The King looked on him as his own son
And helped him be the greatest knight!
The third - a maiden - was a beauty
And maybe even all our banes
But even without law and duty
She'd have undone us all the same...
I lived beside them when the wars raged.
I lived amongst them in their blithe
And I was with them still when more waged.
I watched their grand finale with
A heavy heart to that last dot...
I left my friends in Camelot.

You can safely guess what I'd say about this one ...so I'll skip the words and post as many clapping hands as they'll allow.

I finally read the last story in "The Once And Future King." I think I put it off for so long because I didn't want it to be over.

Very cool!! I love your take on the prompt. How original to use books as your subject, and yet, how many of us find some of our truest friends within those delightful pages? I know I have! Some of my dearest friends are characters within the world of my imagination. Oh what wonderful things are books! Great write, Frodo!
