No Christmas cheer
in our house tonight.
My family’s eyes reproach me,
and only glimmering tinsel
warms my frigid heart
as night drags on; too late
to pull back teasing words.
Why can I not apologize?
Does shame smother sense
in this frigid sink of blame?
The echo of our silent night
will linger on a string
of blinking lights.
