Winter's Delight

To wake upon a Winters morn and see the landscape's white
the snow has transformed every single tree,
and children chatter loudly with their faces shining bright,
they build a snowman for the world to see.

Jack Frost has played his magic on the river and the glass
by tracing pretty patterns with his ice,
the frozen water glistens like some highly polished brass
and rising wood smoke adds a touch of spice.

As the day is dying and the sun goes down to rest
long shadows dance across the sparkling snow,
the last few rays of sunlight disappear behind the crest
and the moon designs a very different show.

The stars against a backdrop of an inky velvet sky
shine and twinkle brightly from above,
the fire is crackling in the grate, the world lets out a sigh
it’s Christmas Eve, mankind is filled with love.

Such a classic. Almost a Christmas Carol. And, it is so fitting with the picture by Kincade. So fitting and such a beautiful tale is told.

A lovely image of the perfect festive season. I do so miss the snow here in the UK. The structure of your rhyme scheme and the steady meter are carefully constructed for a great effect. Well done Sue and have a Merry Xmas. "bird"

I love the imagery that went along with this write and the painting on the side is perfect for this piece as well. Thomas Kincade is one of my favorite painters so it is two marvelous works of art tied together.
It really reminds me of the weather that I am experiencing right now.
    Beautiful.

Such a pretty picture set in words that go so wonderfully well with the romantic art of Thomas Kincade. Soft and gentle and how most of us wish the world could be. Sheila

    nice touch

Hi Sue, you painted a really good image here, words on paper like a brush on canvas. Beautiful. My only suggestions (not being critical, just things to consider) are this: "landscape white" seems forced, that is not how we would speak normally, but it is an easy change. "glass" you used as a noun, when I think it might read better as an adjective. I wasn't crazy about "inky" as a descriptive word. But, again, just minor thoughts on a well written piece. nice work - Kevin

Just having seen Sue on the front page I re-read and looked at her comments, I agree with you about the landscape white I suspect it is a typo for "landscape's white" so I sent her an IM to that effect. but I'm sure she means glass as a noun, at least the glass in my windows has some truly beautiful examples of Jack's artistry at this time of year!

Ah, yes, cold outside, but that is what the fire in the grate is for! We just had about 4" of snow, which means at least half a meter on the ground, and it was sunny today -- your poem describes it very well. As usual your attention to detail is matched only by the perfection of your rhymes! Lovely.

Wow Sis you have really captured the feel of a bright winter's dawn here... there really is nothing quite so magical as frost sparkling in the early sunlight.
