Rat Race

I chased a rat pawed by the cat
to rescue it from claw and gnaw;
to set it free
before the catch ...
but it was too fast for me.
Instead it fled
and met its end:
the cat chewed off its head.

I guess this rat race is of choice;
please listen to the inner voice ...
flee from captivity.

Author notes

Sometimes distrust leads to destruction. This poem really happened last night. One cannot flee from Love. HUGS to you!

    Wow. There is such a powerful meaning behind this...one other than what the words literally say. I just love it when a poet speaks a message behind the lines that he or she is actually writing. You have done a wonderful job at demonstrating this talent.

    So true. Sometimes a lack of trust only causes more pain and ruins good things rather than keeping one from getting hurt. Your poem took this on in a playful manner in my own opinion, though it can be viewed as rather gruesome as well.

    Thank you for entering.

    Life can be a game of cat and mouse.We have to ensure we have lots of cheese to give us strength to beat the cat at his own game , Ros

    I once encountered a giant rat whilst in Thailand, Leopoldamys neilli was its name and it was one of the biggest rodents I have encountered. Quite ferocious as well.

    Cute! It refers to real life itself. I tried to interpret, this is my best: it could be a person trying to tell a secret but being reluctant. They don't want to share the secret so the claw it back into themselves.

    this is can represent symbolizing that cat for the sadden part of what we call be insecure or angry..."too late" I would call it for one who has not believe God and he must die the head of the rat is ofcourse the soul of inner man. *Aurielle* aka ClassicGrace

    A duckling was cruising the reed on a river bank. Below it a pike looked upward to the critter, from above an eagle looked down on it. Both predators increased their pace and the question was who would reach it first. Then a big splash. After which the eagle flew away holding the pike in its talons. And the duckling continued to explore the reed. Ack.

    shocking but very true, sadly not many realize
    that distrust and harsh feeling create chaos in our life's.
    I believe it may be because not many are listening to their inner voice.

    well done my friend

    God bless you...

    This makes me think of humanity, probably because I hear so many people call it a rat race. This is very good!!

    ... gosh, the dumb rat ... I think this is a swell little poem about really big things way far beyond its subject matter ... it is like when somebody at work tries to be kind and make your day better with an act of kindness but you're too busy to let it work ...

    yeah, gonna give this some thought
