only in dreams

Something about the way that first, hesitant tear clung to your eyelashes,
crystalizing the light as it tickled the green in your eyes,

something about the way that miniscule hand reached,
and the way your sob echoed with something more than joy,
as you lowered your face

and met all five fingers,
grasping with wide-mouthed wonder,
at the shimmering droplet suspended in the corner of your eye.

The universe ground to a halt and I was re-born
a thousand times in that moment
when it first sank in:

"this is my son."

Author notes

"Luke's so cute"

Heyy so just in case you weren't sure I wrote this from the father's eyes.

I wish you the best and brightest of days with Luke and hope that this little poem can do him justice (although I'm sure no words truly will).

cheers.
