A picture may be worth a thousand words,
but a sip can speak volumes.
The memories of the Italian road trip,
of that proposal all those years ago.
Or perhaps the only opera you've ever attended,
with the wine being the only thing remembered.
It's more than just wine, though,
it's truth born of time, nurtured by the earth,
containing it's gospel within its inebriating waters.
The scent, like a sweet mold, with mint,
almost choking in its bouquet.
The way it can seem to thicken from glass to throat,
as though pulling syrup from your tongue.
Oh, but to sit in a gondola with a nicely aged vintage,
a capo, and an antiquated nylon-stringed guitar...
No kiss, no fragrance, no image more pure,
than fermented bulbs from the soil,
squeezed into good old wine.
P.S.
The bottle means nothing, please recycle.
Author notes
It's hard to get a good wine around here without going down to Napa or something, so I didn't really have the inspiration I'd hope for in this. Please don't hold it against me! ~;-)

Hmmmm. . . .
Being in the third largest wine producing county in the state, I have to disagree with you here. Good California wine can be found from San Diego, to all points north. The BEST WINE I've ever had from ANYWHERE (Mount Palomar California Reisling) is produced about 25 miles from my house.
You have all those wonderful little wineries up there too, Wild Horse, Meridian, Silver Oak. . .isn't J. Lohr up there too? . . .and many many more.
I love wine you see. My tree of life is the Vine.
Dionysus is my favorite god, and what else can you say about something that tastes so fucking good?
How did I miss this contest?
Sorry, effected me I guess.
Love,
Jin

I tried really hard to put my dislike for wine aside while reading this. I am sure that it has it's finer points and qualities, although I've yet to discover them! I like the tone, old world feel to this and agree that you probably couldn't find a quality wine without going to Napa!!!
