invades my thoughts:
cutting our own tree,
family all together,
making home-made ornaments,
baking cookies,
wrapping small presents,
excitement of the season.
But last year holds a special place,
my time with my dad
for his final Christmas;
we already knew
there wouldn’t be another one;
so I went with silly things
for lots of surprise and laughter,
‘toys’ he would never expect
A giant Rudolph, horns all lit up
twinkling merrily as he danced and sang
to “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer”;
the surprise on his face
when he unwrapped that,
I’ll never forget;
of course, the wacky neon-yellow chicken
than danced all over the floor
to the song “macarena”
was a close second.
And my mother, who had Alzheimer’s,
petting the reindeer,
telling us all to catch those chickens
as somehow they had gotten out again,
glimmer of her past life
growing up on a farm,
sifting into her lost memory
as she watched that chicken
dancing in the middle of the room.
Even all the good memories
of Christmas as a child,
can’t replace the special time
of your ‘last’ Christmas with a loved one.

I have a lot of good memories as a child - but I think the last year with my dad, and mom, will always hold special memories.
(I just liked that picture - found on Google search)
Please tell me what you think

This reminds me of that last year with my mama. She had Lou Gehrig. I bought her a life size barbie because she'd been wanting one for her doll collection. I'm so happy I did.

Thank you 'Denerica' - I had a hard time with that holiday, but decided to make his last one, our last one, a fun one. Then this Christmas past, I was without mom also - and got my bad news. Holidays don't seem to like me much. (lost my gram on Thanksgiving a few years back, and also a younger brother at that time, too).

I am sorry you can relate to this......
It is a beautiful memory for me, though. Both parents passed away in the last year, and this Christmas will seem empty without them....

My season always seems to have a touch of sadness or bad news - I am just praying that this year will be different - somehow, right now, it looks like another really bad year - but I hang on to hope....
