New Mexico

For Christmas in New Mexico
home of enchanting vistas
we can't always count on snow
to accent our red chili ristras.

Houses adorned with farolitos
give a warm glow to crisp nights.
Anise and cinnamon bizcochitos
add to childrens delights.

Up on the high plateau
we gather wood until we tire.
Find a place where the wind is low
to have a Christmas night bonfire.

Good cheer and guitar strums
keep the cold away.
The steady beat of drums
continue until the break of day.

Thank you for sharing this with me. I loved the imagery in your poem. It sounds like a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas.

    I love it!

This is really good! I love New Mexico, I have lived there since I was born. One of the things I noticed that you didn't add was luminarias. One of the highlights of my Christmases is walking around the square of Old Town in Albuquerque and watching the lights flicker, if there is snow (I know, a dream!) that is even better! Also, the mountains rising up out of the ground, frosted with snow is a sight that I always look forward to, even though it doesn't relate directly to Christmas. THis poem really paints beautiful imagery, and I love it! Amazing!

Thanks very much, I used luminarias, but just called them farolitos, they are one and the same

Each state has many different customs even on such a universal holiday. It really makes me appreciate the diversity of our wonderful country.

    Wow

This is just super! This is by far my favorite entry to this contest. I love all the Spanish named customs like the lighted bags (farolitos) and strings of chili you mention, would love the taste of those bizcochitos and to build a fire on the mesa, hear those drums on Christmas night. This just sparkles with authenticity -Beautiful job. Merry Christmas, New Mexico!
