Tolerance Now

By: Danielle Schmidt

Trudging to the trains, being penned like animals
Only to be dragged into camps, caged, and kept
Life expectancies halved, many shorter
Execution of the weak and children ordered by
Reich instruction, “To the gas chambers”
Anti-Semitic propaganda screaming form newspapers across this Aryan nation
Not withstanding those personages who fought with
Charity in their hearts, knowing Hitler was a loon
Exercising their faith in choosing to aid, conceal, decoying desperations trail with blood

Now where is our tolerance… what legacy has been left? When
Occasions merit spewing hate-filled words: mocking a person’s belief, sexual orientation,
And race
Waking each day to find tolerance gone: our world crumbles in false designs

Are we no better?

When one states they don't agree with homosexuallity, it's the same as saying one doesn't agree with anything in the natural world, and almost every other species existences that portray, just that.

It is religion <(man's warped mind) that is unatural, not sexual preferences. As many preists constantly proove to us. (who mentioned Ted Haggard?) other than that, nicely written.

    • I do not have to agree with someones life style. But I do have to respect them and not judge. I honestly have many friends that are gay. I have learned to accept that and they for who I am. I respect and do not judge.
Besides your comment is based off of never speaking to me and accusing me of being ignorant.

    Well Done

A heart felt sad poem that describes the pain of bigotry and the desire to free oneself of this madness. A well written poem with strong emotions and a clever depiction of how others can effect your whole outlook on life.

  • Ah..the begining of the poem with such a strong immage of the caged animals is very strong and very impressive one..truth is revealed in this poem..

  • Strongly spoken no doubt.
Thanks for entering; good luck to you.

wow i totaly understand it is like Hitler i mean is it really a free world if you cannot love another guy or girl cannot be gay (i am not just saying)

  • Wow, this hit me, wasn't what I expected from the title, but it was still hauntingly good. I appreciate your stance as stated in your author's notes down to the detail, especially about homosexuality. It seems that we as a society have become desensitized to things so much that what we do accept in the coming years would shock our forefathers. Well done.

PS I just watched "The Boy In The Striped Pajamas" and it was intensely depressing. This poem illustrates perfectly certain aspects of the film..

an interesting read, on a topic I find much to debate. I also like to write on the injustices dealt to individuals or groups in the past, hence my penname...for the most part my historical writing deals with the American Indian. I respect your views as penned in your author notes. Overall, a good read. Well done.

I've read a lot of peoms dealing with this "ethnic cleansing" and tolerance before, and this one is interesting.

I feel that you could remove

Not withstanding those personages who fought with
Charity in their hearts, knowing Hitler was a loon
Exercising their faith in choosing to aid, conceal, decoying desperations trail with blood

because if you're talking about a lack of tolerance, it would be stronger if you didn't temper your example with acts of kindness as well.

Overall very nice. Thank you for sharing this poem.
