My Innocence Was Ignorance

I was a young Marine on R&R from Koreas far rugged fields
and dirty from soaked in oil and ground in dirt
when I saw her on the dance floor. I must see what that yields
I thought; then cut in like a jerk and began to flirt.

She was still on his payroll and I decided one day I could
wait for this dimuitive Japanise gal with a poodle cut.
Instinctively I knew that for me she would be very good.
The feel was romantic; not like I was going to pay for a slut.

She cleaned me up and washed out the stinking Korean grime.
She taught me how to pleasure a woman first; to wait.
She showed me so many ways to love that it was sublime.
I forgot she was bought and paid for. I thought it was a date.

She seemed to love me back. Iwas with love completely stricken
and began dreaming of ways to marry this lovely prostitute
though I knew that for American service men it was forbidden.
When she asked me when I was leaving to send another it wasn't cute.

It cut me to the core. I became resolute and played that old game
men often play called "Dog in the Manger". I'd send no man to her.
If I couldn't have her none of my buddies could. My dame
was mine alone. Though she made me a man I acted like a cur.

Poem Quote No.1 is:

“Smile as if
Taken by your innocence
Realize it was not innocence
But ignorance
And I painted you
With the brush of my imagination” – Hanging Shadows

I love this tale and the way it is told. Very much a tale of youthful naiveity, realization, though there is a little regret and sadness strung through the words, which caps it all off really well.

    Good write.
