Mighty human endeavor

Dexterous brilliant animals,
Struggled off the plains and out
Of the trees, made it to caves,
Learned to build huts.  Divinely
Or humbly inspired, the first dared
Reach for the stars, impossible goals.

Ziggurats and pyramids were built.
The heavens stayed remote.
Towers of increasing height rose,
Structural steel perfected,
Abodes touched the clouds.

Fiction writers added more inspiration,
Scientists perfected chemical conflagrations,
Rockets were built and sent aloft:
Finally, mankind could touch the face of God.

Now, permanent habitations being built
In firmament of the heavens:  Space.
Noble or not, humankind is assuming
Possession of the first major new
Territory of the heavens:  Solar System.

Godspeed, Endeavor!  Don't forget
To add a room with a view for me, too!

Author notes

The mission was pretty successful, other than that lost bag of tools. Bit by bit, we are building our way out there.

This is wonderfully written and, as our host commented, it made me smile: deserving of the Honorable trophy!
