The Cattle Cars

The Cattle Cars

The wheels on the train go clackety clack
The people inside them choke and hack
Crammed in together, no food to spare
Gasping and panting, crying for air

Days go by without food nor water
People drop dead like lambs to the slaughter
There's no room to move, no chance to sit down
we all stand together, passing town after town

Do they know where we're going?
To our deaths all unknowing?
Frightened and tired we wait for our stop
freedom to slavery, our lives we must swap

But for what you might ask, will we slave away till death do us part?
For someone else's hatred we must suffer and depart
from family and friends, this world will will leave
because none of these townspeople will for us never grieve

Clickety Clack, Clackety Clack
The wheels start slowing upon the cold tracks
The smell of smoke fills the air
and my friends and my family cry out in despair

Arbeit Macht Frei! The gate sign declares
but we know by now to really beware.
The sign is a lie, the way out is death
I'll live here now, until my last breath

The door slides open for the first time in days,
The grey light infiltrates the dark smoky haze.
I step out with my family and watch there in fear
as my father and mother shed goodbye tears.

My father goes right, my mother and I left,
Little did we know, we were going to our deaths.
But that is my journey in the cold cattle cars
I leave now to die under cold winter stars

Remember me always, don't forget why I died
Because one man's hatred, let my life be denied
I guess the camp slogan doesn't apply to me,
Because in the left line I begin to see

Why the cattle cars denied me so much
A cattle car's journey leads to death's crutch.
The gun shots ring out, and people start to scream
My mother holds onto me as our blood starts to stream

So good bye to the world, I'll miss you forever
Remember my words, let's hope for something better.
So people like me in decades to come
can live like you and hear earth's heartbeat strum.

Good bye

Author notes

I made this off the top of my head and just wanted to post it before I forgot to do so. It's one of a series of Holocaust poems I''ll be writing.

And yes, I do realize this posted more then once. My computer went nuts on me, so...let's leave it at that?
