A Holiday Lesson

We had a big family
A family of nine
Every Christmas still haunts me
That teenage cockiness of mine

Christmas we asked for one thing
we wanted most
Of course, my wish was
a trip to the West Coast

I worked nights that year
Bought nice gifts for all
In hopes my one wish
wouldn't take a fall

Christmas eve, gifts filled the
family room floor
I was certain my gift was disguised in a box
nearest the front door

All were excited Christmas morn
As presents came one by one
My curiosity was worn

Finally the box by the door was handed to me
I quickly glanced at a pair of boots, lots of new clothes
But no trip ticket did I see

With anger I threw my presents aside
In my room I sulked with disbelief
My one wish was denied

Weeks later my parents packed my gifts in a chest
For a long time inside I held a grudge
Then unexpectedly, we had to lie my parents to rest

Years later I found all my nice gifts neatly packed
In one boot I found a note that was tacked

Look beyond the obvious my son
For in the other boot you will find
a plane ticket, your wish
I hope you know how hard I worked for this

Hear these words srtaight from your farthers heart
To be selfish in life will tear you apart

We have faith in your wisdom
for your our first born boy
We will always be there for you
Go on your class trip
Merry Christmas, and to the fullest
enjoy......
