Shiohigari

While digging shellfish

At low tide, the moon is glad

To be of service.

Author notes

It's warm on the Pacific coast and it's a good time for going out, isn't it? Today, I'd like to introduce you to "Shiohigari", or shellfish gathering.

Shiohigari is a kind of traditional leisure in sea-surrounded cultures. During warm weather, not only fishermen but ordinary people go to the beach and enjoy gathering shellfish when the tide goes out, thanks to the moon. And they bring the shellfish to their home to cook and eat them. Everyone can easily gather shellfish when the tides go out, and they also taste good.

You don't need any technique for Shiohigari, but some tools are very useful. "Kumade", or a small rake is helpful for taking shellfish out of the beach. And a net is useful because you can put the shellfish into a net and easily wash it with water. And a cooling box is convenient to keep the shellfish fresh. After you return home, leave the shellfish in the seawater or the same salt concentration water for 5-6 hours and let them spit sand. After that, wash them well and cook them.

Why don't you enjoy Shiohigari with your family and also cook pasta or soup with the shellfish you gathered?

Thank you for your thoughtful comments...

You are the flatterer today!! Thanks for stopping by, and remember, Haiku is easy!! It's as simple as 5-7-5: Five syllables in the first line, seven in the second line, and five again in the last line. Easy!! Let's see you try!! Take care and Happy New Year to You and Yours!!

    Beautiful Haiku..Interesting Subject!

Ah, Cyn..Close to my heart after being raised in a little city by the Pacific shore here..Crabbing, collecting oysters have been part of my memories in past and not so long ago..We put oatmeal in the pots of sea water with the oysters, and that helped make them spit and open their shells...Such a fascinating write...Your writes are often very much a part of the earth, and enjoying it...This truly is one of your unique examples...Delightful to read...and your footnote of authors' notes....Bravo!
